Tips for Keeping Children Healthy

While this list isn’t exhaustive, there are different ways you can encourage your child to stay healthy, even when they’re at daycare or school. Read through some of our tips, and work with Just For Kids to ensure your child has a safe space to spend their time out of school.

Wash Your Hands

While this is something you and your children have heard in excess throughout the year, hand washing can help keep your child healthy throughout the new school year. Whether they’ve just gone to the bathroom or touched a contaminated surface, encourage your children to routinely wash their hands, or use hand sanitizer when they can’t go to the bathroom.

Healthy

There are a lot of different factors that go into children’s health, including what they’re eating, how active they are, and how much sleep they’re getting.

To start, take a look at what they’re eating and ensure they’re getting a proper balance of fruits, veggies, and other nutrients. Then, according to the Sleep Foundation, preschool-aged children need an average of 10–13 hours of sleep while school-age children need 9–11 hours. Move up their bedtime if they’re not getting the right amount of sleep.

Finally, take a look at how active they are. Encourage them to stay active, around 60 minutes of physical activity each day! For some ideas, take a look at our previous blog post: Fun, Engaging Summer Activities to Do With Your Kids.

Reduce Sharing

While this is especially hard to instill in young children, explain the importance of not sharing personal items with their peers. This includes items like their water bottles, food, face coverings, chapsticks, or writing utensils.

Face Coverings

While face masks can be new and scary for young children, they are an important line of defense against COVID-19 and other germs.

Stay Home

Whether a family member or your child is sick, have them stay home and rest up. This both reduces their chances of spreading whatever sickness they have to their peers and gives them time to fully recover from their illness.
