How To Help Your Child Avoid Summer Learning Loss

As we discussed in a previous post, summer learning loss is a very real problem that affects school children, especially at young ages.

Analysis of more than 100 years of education research shows that students typically show poorer performance on standardized tests at the end of summer vacation compared to scores earned on the same tests at the beginning of the summer.

“Research has shown that, on average, the total learning loss that occurs over the summer is equivalent to roughly one month of instruction,” explains ChildCareAware.org. That’s a lot of lost knowledge!

Summer learning loss can be frustrating for parents and discouraging for children, especially if they struggled to make progress during the school year. The good news is, signing your kids up for summer camp can help.

With the right summer camp, kids will remain stimulated and challenged throughout the summer. Instead of sitting in front of the television, or playing games on their iPad, kids who attend our summer camps are challenged to continue learning, develop new skills, and work on their socialization by making friends with other children who aren’t a part of their usual school.

It’s important not to just pick any summer camp for kids, however. According to ChildCareAware.org, programs should be chosen based on the following criteria:

  • Small group sizes
  • Individualized instruction and attention for children at different levels
  • Alignment with what your child learns during the school year
  • Engaging learning that includes enrichment outside the classroom
  • Enough instruction to make an impact (generally >80 hours is recommended)
  • Encouragement of parent involvement
